MARKETING INTERN AT DIALEXY LTD

After successfully graduating from his postgraduate studies Nuvaquahu took the chance to undertake a placement at Dialexy and gain first-hand experience working in marketing as part of a startup company in Edinburgh.

What did you achieve during your placement and what tasks did you undertake?

It is probably impossible to list all the things that I have learned and achieved during my placement at Dialexy.com. In terms of marketing, I have had the chance to show what I have learned at university and put it into practice, for example creating a marketing strategy or a content plan for the company. But, to be honest, I did not always know how to start new projects or plans, but as soon as I began, it all took shape and at the end of the day I already had a clear idea of how things would develop and look like in the end. Amongst other things, I managed all social media channels, reviewed and analysed the company’s performance online, and conducted partner interviews and customer surveys to improve the company’s platform. My favourite part of my placement was probably designing visually captivating marketing material to enhance audience engagement. Over time I learned a lot about what audiences like and what they do not like, understanding their way of thinking better.

What have you gained personally from this placement?

My experience with Dialexy.com has taught me so much more than what I expected. I have become more confident in my actions, learned to always be open to new ideas and concepts and that working together as a team makes a big difference, especially when you are in a small team. In addition, learning how to network at company events with different organisation and companies has also given me a better insight of how companies are connected to each other. But probably the most important thing that I have gained personally is to not be scared of the unknown. It actually might be something good. The only way to find out is to go and try it. And that is what I did at Dialexy.com. I often challenged myself to try new things and if I did not know how to do things, I somehow found a way to do them. Maybe not at my first attempt, but it always got better.

What do you think the business has gained from having you on placement?

With Dialexy being a rather small start-up company I hope that I was able to bring the business a step forward and also pass on some pieces of advice for future projects. Coming from a different background than the rest of the team, I think I was able to show and explain different thought processes and strategies that could be valuable for the company.

Would you recommend the ScotGrad Programme to other graduates?

I would definitely recommend the ScotGrad Programme to anyone who has recently graduated, as it gives you an immediate opportunity to show your potential, but more importantly to learn how businesses and things work in the real world. At university you get to learn a lot of things, but there are things that you cannot learn in a classroom with 25 other students.

Another thing that I would like to pass on to other future graduates is that you will often be in situations where you have the feeling that you do not know how things will be like, keep in mind that trying things is just part of the whole experience and that you should not be scared to face new challenges.
