Translating documents for the Solicitors Regulation Authority and Law Society
If you have qualified overseas, to practice law in England and Wales you must register with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and pass the SRA Assessment of Character and Suitability. You may also be required to be registered with an equivalent overseas legal body.
If you have qualified as a lawyer overseas, or as a Registered Foreign Lawyer (RFL) in England and Wales, you must complete the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme (QLTS) to practice as a fully certified solicitor. The QLTS will be replaced with the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) in Autumn 2021.

Throughout the process of registering as an RFL, or completing the QLTS/SQE, you will need to provide certified translations of your original documents if these are not already in English. These documents may include:

Translating documents for the Law Society of Scotland
To practice law in Scotland you must register as a Registered Foreign Lawyer(RFL) with the Law Society of Scotland.
To practice as a solicitor in Scotland, you must complete the Qualified Lawyers Assessment (QLA). Obtaining a Certificate of Eligibility is the first part of your application. The Certificate of Eligibility demonstrates that you meet the criteria to practice law in Scotland and the process to obtain this includes:
- Providing a Certificate of Good Standing from your Home Bar Association
- Completing a Disclosure Scotland application, including criminal background checks
- Providing evidence of your academic and professional qualifications
You will need to provide certified translations of your original documents throughout this process if your documents are not already in English. These documents will be needed for your application to the Law Society of Scotland and for your Disclosure Scotland application.
